Sinclair University's Department of Biological Sciences has been awarded a $2 million federal grant to expand wetland conservation research at the university's field station and strengthen undergraduate participation in environmental science.
The multi-year award will support updated field equipment, student stipends, and long-term ecological monitoring at the university's protected wetland site on the edge of Oakhaven.
Faculty expect the grant to expand opportunities for biology and environmental science students to participate in original field research much earlier in their academic careers.
“This grant allows our students to do serious environmental work in a setting that is both scientifically valuable and close enough to campus to shape the undergraduate experience every year.”
Faculty teams will begin the first phase of equipment upgrades this spring, with expanded student research placements launching in the next academic cycle.
The university also expects the grant to support public-facing talks and field-based community education tied to wetland preservation.
